It's a Goal!

Background
In Reception (P1), children begin recognise short vowel sounds in CVC words (e.g rat, cat, dog, hat) and begin to associate letters with the sounds and so spell the words. "It's a Goal!" gives children practice in recognising familiar objects and choosing the correct vowel from a choice of two, to complete the word spelling. The activity is set within a motivating and colourful beach football scene where the player completes the word by scoring a goal.

Teaching suggestions
Before introducing the online activity, you might like to use the printable resources provided with this activity as a warm-up. Check that your pupils can recognise what all the pictures are before you play the game. This activity works well for individual work or equally as a whole class activity - if you are lucky enough to have an interactive whiteboard, for example. The class could be divided into two teams, taking it in turns to call out the correct vowel needed to complete the word.

Follow-up activities using the printable resources
All the graphics used in this activity are provided on two sheets, which can be printed out and cut out. Use these in the classroom to practise recognising familiar words and simple spelling. There are also two pages to print out with all the CVC words used in this activity laid out. Cut out the words and ask your pupils to match the words with the corresponding picture and to complete the word with the correct vowel. Use the colourful resources for a variety of classroom reinforcement activities such as snap or pelmanism.
