Your 4 to 5 year-old child in Reception

What should your child be learning?

 - Early Learning Goals

Ways to help

 - All subjects

Homework
The government does not recommend homework for this age group, although if your child is starting to read you may be asked to read with him or practise her letters at home.

Tests
There are no formal tests for children of this age, but from school year 2002-2003 children will be assessed on their achievements in the government's Early Learning Goals and a profile drawn up at the end of the reception year. For more on this, click on 'What should my child be learning - Early Learning Goals' above.

Remember

It is natural for children to reach developmental and educational milestones at different times. If your child is struggling, talk to his teacher, health visitor or GP. Otherwise, give him time and encouragement and don't worry!
